Nuage, Beijing

Behind the No Name Bar in Beijing's Houhai District is Nuage, a Vietnamese restaurant and late nightclub overlooking the Qianhai Lake. Inside is funky chill decor with plenty of green plants and dining tables using actual rickshaws. 

Sea Snail - served chilled, tossed in fish sauce, chili, basil, daikon, carrot. Outrageous. To die for.
Beef in Coconut - sliced beef marinated in lemongrass, chili and coconut juice. I almost caught on fire a few times. Tender, juicy and awesome meat. I was too preoccupied with the flames to fully enjoy.
Crab in Ginger Sauce - messy, messy...too complex for eating in front of new friends.
Pineapple Fried Rice with Shrimp - we each got our very own pineapple boat stuffed with rice tossed in nuts, herbs and small shrimp.
Shrimp on Sugarcane - the crust was fried and flavors rocked.
Shrimp Crepes - turmeric crepes stuffed with shrimp and bean sprouts and greens. 
Asparagus - weak...don't bother ordering this!

Rickshaws were everywhere. We took one to Nuage and to the Drum Tower.
Everywhere, we saw boards placed in front of car wheels. Guess why? To prevent dogs from peeing on the wheels!

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving at Angie's was beautiful. She even cooked a turkey for the first time ever. And it was amazing! Awesome food, great wine, old friends and, the best of all, our crazy happy kids screaming and running all over the place :) Here's the menu.

I made: (1) Seared Mushrooms, (2) Rice Noodles, (3) Beef Tenderloin and (4) Tofurky. (I also made Green Beans and spaced, completely forgetting to bring them. Ugh!)

Angie made: (1) Spiced Hummus, (2) Tuna Ceviche, (3) Spiced Chips, Guacamole and Salsa, (4) Decadent Mushroom Gravy, (5) Roasted Turkey, (6) Cornbread Stuffing, (7) Cranberry Chutney, (8) Mashed Potatoes and (9) Pumpkin Spiced Cake.

Gorgeous Red - Goldeneye Pinot Noir Anderson Valley 1997. F pairs deliciously.
Spiced Hummus - with Zahtar, a blend of dried thyme, oregano, sesame seeds, sumac.
Spicy Chips - falafel chips from Liberty Heights Fresh
Guacamole - avocados, chopped shallots, fresh cilantro, salt, lime juice.
Green Salsa fresh cilantro, fresh parsley, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper, hungarian paprika, ground cumin. YUM!
Tuna Ceviche and Tortilla Chips WOW! Amazing, addicting... chopped red peppers, shallots, fresh cilantro, lime juice, olive oil, salt and pepper, a nice sashimi grade tuna from Aquarius Fish Co.
Oh, the casual reading material around here ;)... 
Soul-mate friends catch up over YouTube Pokemon tutorials, etc., and Wiiiiiiiii....

It is always a delightful surprise to hear what the kids have to say in giving thanks :)
Crazy Decadent Shroomy Gravy - Chanterelles, Crimini and Hen-of-the-Wood (aka Maitake) mushrooms, olive oil, garlic, paprika, cayenne, s/p, basil, fresh thyme, fresh oregano, a very nice red wine, veggie stock, whipping cream...thickened with some cornstarch. Incredible. Decadent. The finest stuff in the world. The word 'Gravy' does it no justice.
Celery Root Mashed Potatoes, Vegan! - Not your average mash - equal amounts of celery root and potatoes...roasted garlic, salt, olive oil.
TURKEY! - dry salt rub...salt, lemon zest, fresh thyme, fresh oregano, garlic, pepper...stuffed with celery, onion, carrots, fresh thyme, fresh oregano, fresh rosemary, salt and pepper, lemons, olive oil, vegetable broth.

Cornbread - gluten free, made with masa and herbs.
Spinach and Roasted Beet Salad spinach, roasted beets, spicy pumpkin seeds, fresh goat's cheese, olive oil, pure pomegranate concentrate.
Seared Garlicky Japanese Mushrooms - brown and white beech mushrooms, king oyster, oyster mushroom, garlic, shallot, lime, fresh ginger, scallion, black sesame seeds, ponzu, red chili flakes.
Cornbread Stuffing - made with gluten free masa cornbread, caramelized onions, anaheim and Poblano chilies, bell peppers, garlic, cumin, oregano, raw goat cheddar cheese...

Seared Rice Noodles, "final" shot - fresh rice noodles (hidden under all the green), soy sauce, salt and pepper, fresh ginger, garlic, shallot, onion, peas, corn, dried cranberries, sesame, fresh mint, fresh basil, scallion, fresh basil, olive oil.
Tofurkey - tofu turkey and wild rice stuffing by Tofurky, baked in soy sauce, olive oil and orange juice, bok choy.
Orange-Cranberry Chutney - cranberries, onion, black mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fennel seeds. 
Tenderloin Roast - beef tenderloin massaged and marinated in chopped garlic, fresh oregano, fresh rosemary, salt and pepper, olive oil.
Ahhh....;) So much goodness...
Pumpkin Spice Cake - gluten-free mix from Namaste Foods, added to it fresh pie pumpkin (roasted at 400 for 90 min), 3 eggs, oil, water...
